Pilgrims for a Greener Tirumala

♻️ About the Event

The Eco-Saviours Green Seva Movement is a community-driven environmental initiative that combines spiritual devotion with environmental responsibility. Led by environmental activist and software engineer Shivaji Paleti, the movement encourages pilgrims visiting Tirumala to actively participate in cleanliness drives and plastic waste removal activities along trekking routes and surrounding forest areas.

What began as a small volunteer effort has evolved into a growing environmental movement where devotees voluntarily join cleanup activities after completing their pilgrimage. By transforming environmental service into a form of spiritual service, the initiative promotes sustainable practices and greater public awareness about protecting sacred natural spaces.

🎯 Vision

To keep pilgrimage routes, temple surroundings, and forest ecosystems free from plastic waste while encouraging devotees and citizens to actively participate in environmental conservation through community-led service activities.

🌱 The Beginning of the Movement

The initiative was started by Shivaji Paleti, a US-returned software engineer and PhD scholar who chose to dedicate his weekends to environmental service activities in the Tirupati–Tirumala region.

For more than three and a half years, he has travelled nearly 120 kilometers every weekend to conduct cleanliness drives and environmental awareness programs along pilgrimage routes and temple surroundings.

His vision was to create a movement where environmental protection becomes a shared responsibility among devotees, volunteers, and local communities.

🌍 Green Seva Along Tirumala Trekking Routes

The movement focuses on maintaining cleanliness along the trekking routes used by thousands of pilgrims visiting Tirumala.

Volunteers regularly remove:

  • Plastic bottles
  • Food wrappers
  • Carry bags
  • Single-use plastic waste
  • Other litter discarded along trekking paths

As volunteers work along the routes, many pilgrims stop to learn about the initiative and voluntarily participate in cleanup activities.

The movement has demonstrated how simple acts of service can inspire collective environmental responsibility.

♻️ Eco-Saviours Volunteer Initiative

The environmental activities are conducted under the Eco-Saviours banner, which promotes community participation and environmental education.

The initiative organizes:

  • Weekly cleanliness drives
  • Plastic waste collection campaigns
  • Environmental awareness activities
  • Volunteer engagement programs
  • Sustainable waste management advocacy

The organization encourages citizens and pilgrims to become active contributors to environmental protection efforts.

🌳 Environmental Conservation Efforts

Beyond waste removal, the movement promotes broader environmental sustainability through:

  • Awareness on reducing single-use plastics
  • Responsible disposal of waste
  • Protection of forest ecosystems
  • Community environmental education
  • Promotion of eco-friendly habits

These efforts contribute to preserving the ecological balance of pilgrimage destinations and surrounding natural landscapes.

🎓 Community Awareness & Participation

One of the most distinctive aspects of the initiative is the spontaneous participation of devotees.

According to Shivaji Paleti, many pilgrims view environmental service as an extension of their spiritual journey and willingly join cleanup efforts after completing their darshan.

This community-driven participation has helped expand the movement and strengthen public awareness regarding environmental responsibility.

🤝 Impact on Pilgrimage Destinations

The initiative has made a measurable contribution toward maintaining cleaner pilgrimage environments.

According to the organizers:

  • More than 29,000 kilograms of plastic waste have been removed.
  • Thousands of devotees have been exposed to environmental awareness messages.
  • Volunteer participation continues to increase.
  • Awareness regarding responsible waste disposal has significantly improved.

The movement serves as a model for community-led environmental stewardship at religious and tourist destinations.

🌟 Inspiring Change Through Service

The Eco-Saviours movement demonstrates how environmental action can become a meaningful form of community service.

By combining devotion, volunteerism, and ecological responsibility, Shivaji Paleti and his team continue to inspire citizens and pilgrims to protect nature while preserving the sanctity and cleanliness of sacred spaces.
