PLASTIC FREE TEMPLES

PLASTIC FREE TEMPLES

PLASTIC FREE TEMPLES

September 25, 2019 Read

Objective

To protect temple sanctity and the surrounding environment from plastic pollution.

Explanation

Plastic waste generated by devotees—such as covers, carry bags, and packaging—often mixes with biodegradable temple offerings like flowers, coconuts, and prasad.

To prevent this, bamboo nets and eco-collection baskets are installed around temple premises. These structures allow pilgrims to separate biodegradable offerings from plastic waste.

In addition, eco-awareness posters are displayed to educate devotees about:

  • Bringing cloth bags
  • Avoiding single-use plastics
  • Using eco-friendly alternatives

Benefits

  • Preserves cleanliness and purity of holy temple surroundings.
  • Encourages eco-devotion — “Swachh Mandir, Swachh Manas.”
  • Supports local bamboo artisans and eco-groups by promoting handcrafted bamboo products.

Implementation

  • Work in collaboration with temple boards, priests, volunteers, and youth groups.
  • Distribute bamboo bins, bamboo trays, and install eco-awareness display boards.
  • Set up segregation points for biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste.
  • Encourage pilgrims and vendors to use paper bags, leaf bowls, and cloth bags. """
